Ascential’s Instock data feed tracks the price and availability of apparel, footwear, and accessories products on over 280 leading retailer websites, such as Nike and Tiffany & Co. The Ascential team brings their expertise in pricing, sales, and consumer perception to create this finance-focused dataset, which offers insight into direct-to-consumer e-commerce and wholesales strategies.

This data can be used to track movements in average product price, availability challenges, and product range expansions, as well as to predict gross margin using promotional markdown depths. The data is aggregated weekly and can be analyzed at the following increasing levels of granularity: Retailer, Division, Department, Category, and Subcategory.

Data Methodology

Ascential’s process begins by collecting data from publicly available data sources, including retailer websites, e-commerce platforms, and proprietary large-scale surveys of consumers. When collecting data, Ascential tailors its approach to the individual website and ensures it is accessed in a reasonable way that does not impair the site performance. The data is collected seven days a week, then run through a rigorous quality assurance process and delivered weekly with a three-day lag.

Ascential collects product availability and pricing data at the individual SKU level, which captures each color and size combination, then aggregates the data up to the retailer, division, department, category, and subcategory levels. This aggregation is performed using Ascential’s standard taxonomy developed by its industry specialists, enabling comparisons of common data between brands and retailers.

At each level of granularity, Ascential delivers over 40 metrics describing the product pricing, availability, and depth of markdowns using a variety of aggregation methodologies to expedite analysis and reduce data processing required by its users.

  • Ascential’s consistent and compliance-friendly structured data supports prediction models by tracking key current and historical measures that can influence company performance. This data brings a supply-side perspective to understanding company health. Users often pair this data with company financials to gain timelier insights and better understand the relationship between product pricing, availability, and financial performance.
    • For instance, the depth of price discounting and in-stock levels can inform more accurate gross margin “nowcasts” prior to the release of company financials.
    • Alternatively, this data will reveal how quickly new products are being brought to market and how quickly those products are selling.
