IdealRatings ESG Data provides top-level ESG scores for 34,000+ companies that are calculated by analyzing and aggregating over 150 inputs capturing companies’ environmental, social and governance policies. IdealRatings’ holistic approach captures ESG inputs gathered from companies’ financial and Corporate Social Responsibility reports, credible news sources, Carbon Disclosure Project reports and direct engagement with the companies, among other sources.
The product information and content statistics contained in this document are as of August 2019.
IdealRatings publishes quarterly ESG scores for over 34,000 public companies globally, including large, mid and small cap companies across developed, emerging and frontier markets, with history back to Q4 2013.
IdealRatings uses automated and analyst-driven research processes to aggregate answers to over 150 questions, referred to as inputs, from company reports and external sources. To ensure consistent information is used to calculate ESG scores for each company, IdealRatings leverages surveys and engages directly with companies to collect data for individual inputs when necessary. Each input is used to calculate a Key Performance Indicator (KPI), which rolls up to one of three pillars (Environment, Social, Governance). KPIs within each pillar are weighted based on an industry-relative model to calculate the pillar score, which has a maximum value of 100. The sum of the three pillar scores is the company’s IdealRatings ESG score, which is provided in this DataFeed and is a numeric score between 0 and 300.
IdealRatings’ extensive global coverage allows for comparative ESG analysis across regions and market cap buckets. Individual inputs are aggregated using an industry-weighted methodology to enable comparisons across sectors, in addition to geographies.
Example Use Case
IdealRatings ESG Data provides a standardized, concise measure of ESG performance for companies across a global universe. This data is well suited for high-level investable universe selection strategies that screen for companies with ESG performance above a particular threshold. These scores are also useful for relative and sector allocation analysis, because the aggregation methodology takes each KPI’s sector materiality into account.
The sample of ESG scores below illustrates the global company coverage and the fields included in the feed.
