U.S. M&A deal activity decreased in September, going down 15.9% with 1,054 announcements compared to 1,254 in August. However, aggregate M&A spending increased. In September, 15.7% more was spent on deals compared to August.

Over the past 3 months, one sector saw an increase in M&A deal activity, relative to the same three-month period one year ago: Miscellaneous (5 vs. 4).

Over the past 3 months, 19 of the 21 sectors tracked by FactSet saw a decrease in M&A deal activity. The five sectors that witnessed the largest declines in M&A deal volume (relative to the same three-month period one year ago) were: Finance (595 vs. 1296), Technology Services (710 vs. 1142), Commercial Services (498 vs. 678), Retail Trade (106 vs. 227) and Producer Manufacturing (189 vs. 302).

Nineteen of the 21 sectors tracked by FactSet Mergers also posted relative declines in deal flow (value) over 2,247 deals over the past three months

Topping the list of the largest deals announced in September are: Adobe, Inc.'s agreement to acquire Figma, Inc. for $20 billion; A private group led by GIC Real Estate, Inc. and Oak Street Real Estate Capital LLC entering an agreement to acquire STORE Capital Corp. for $9.1 billion; CVS Health Corp. agreeing to acquire Signify Health, Inc. for $7.2 billion; EQT Corp.'s deal to acquire THQ-XcL Holdings I LLC from Quantum Energy Partners LLC and Tug Hill, Inc. for $5.2 billion; Vista Equity Partners Management LLC's proposal to acquire the remaining 90.6% stake not owned in KnowBe4, Inc. for $3.8 billion.
